YX, Lifan, Zongshen or Loncin: Identify the Engine in Your Pit Bike, Mini Bike or Kart
Find the cast maker mark on the left crankcase and the stamped Chinese model code such as 1P52FMI or 1P56FMJ, then measure the bore. The code tells you bore in millimetres and cylinder orientation directly, and the bore plus the clutch type narrows the family to YX, Lifan, Zongshen or Loncin in under five minutes without splitting anything.

Look at the left crankcase, just behind and below the cylinder. Almost every Chinese horizontal clone engine carries a cast maker mark there or on the clutch cover, and a stamped alphanumeric code somewhere on the same casting. The code is the fastest positive identification available, because it is a national standard rather than a brand decision, and it encodes the bore in millimetres.
1P52FMI. That string tells you: one cylinder, horizontal, 52.4mm bore, four-stroke, air-cooled, long-stroke variant. In other words a 125cc horizontal clone. You now know more than the seller listing did.
What follows turns castings, codes and two measurements into a family verdict, then converts that verdict straight into an order-or-do-not-order call for every major part group. The engine family, not the badge on the tank, decides what physically fits.
Decode the stamped model code first
China uses a standardised engine model designation, and it appears on the vast majority of engines that reach the US in crated machines. It is stamped or cast on the crankcase, and it is also printed on the EPA label and often on the carton.
Read it left to right. The leading digit is cylinder count, almost always 1. The letter P marks a horizontal cylinder; a vertical cylinder omits it or uses a different letter. The two or three digits after that are the bore in millimetres. FM means four-stroke with forced air cooling. The final letter is a stroke class, running roughly alphabetically as stroke gets longer.
That last letter is where people trip up. A 1P52FMH and a 1P52FMI share a bore and are not the same engine: the H is the 110 and the I is the 125, and the piston, cylinder and head are all different heights.

Codes get ground off, painted over or corroded away. When that happens, work down these checkpoints in order. Each one narrows the field; three agreeing checkpoints is a positive identification.

A single cast logo can be wrong if the cases have been swapped, which happens more often than owners expect. One warning about logos. Cases get swapped. A crashed 140 rebuilt on a donor bottom end will happily wear a YX mark on the left case and a Lifan clutch cover, and the piston that fits is determined by the cylinder, not by either casting. When the marks disagree, the caliper wins.
Two measurements settle it
Pull the spark plug, bring the piston to the top, and measure across the bore at the top of the cylinder with a caliper. You are looking for 39, 47, 52.4, 54, 56, 60 or 62mm on a horizontal clone, or 68 to 70mm on a GX-pattern mini bike or kart engine. That number alone rules out most of the field.
Then measure the cylinder height, base gasket face to head gasket face. Two engines with the same bore and different cylinder heights are different displacement classes with different piston compression heights, and this is exactly the trap that catches people ordering a 110 piston for a 125.
If the head is already off for another reason, note the valve head diameters and whether the head has one or two intake ports while you are in there. Write all of it on masking tape and stick it inside the toolbox lid. Most owners find they need those numbers again within a year and cannot remember whether the bore was 52.4 or 54.

These are the families that account for the overwhelming majority of machines in the segment. Jetting figures are stock baselines at low altitude, not a tune.

This is the table that saves money. Verdicts are given against the two reference patterns the whole segment copies: the Honda CRF50 and Super Cub horizontal family for pit bikes and youth machines, and the Honda GX horizontal industrial engine for mini bikes and karts.

Anything on the GX column can usually be bought same-week from a kart supplier. The headline reading of that matrix is simple. Horizontal clone engines copy the Honda layout closely enough that frames, mounts, chains and controls interchange freely, and closely enough that internals almost never do. People expect the opposite. They assume a 125 head goes on a 110 because both are Honda copies, order it, and discover the cylinder height and the cam chain length are both wrong.
Where the GX family splits off
Mini bikes and single-seat karts run a completely different lineage, and it is the friendliest engine family in small powersports.
The reference is the Honda GX160 and GX200 industrial horizontal engine. Clones of it are made by the container-load and sold under Predator, Ducar, DuroMax, Tillotson and half a dozen other names, plus fitted from new to Baja, Coleman, Monster Moto, Mega Moto and TrailMaster machines. All of them share the same base bolt pattern of roughly 162 x 75.5mm, the same starter and flywheel geometry, and the same governor architecture.
The one measurement that matters is the crankshaft. A 79cc or 98cc engine has a keyed output shaft of roughly 5/8 inch. A 196cc or 212cc engine has one of roughly 3/4 inch. Clutches, torque converters and sprockets are sized to the shaft, so a 212 upgrade on a 98cc frame needs a new clutch as well as the engine, and everybody forgets that until the box arrives.
Governors are the other thing to understand before ordering. A GX-pattern engine ships with a mechanical governor that caps engine speed at a level suited to a generator, not a machine with a rider on it. Removing it is trivial and is the single most common modification in the segment. It is also the point at which a stock connecting rod and stock valve springs become the limiting components, which is why billet rods and stiffer springs are stocked everywhere.
Parts that look identical and are not
- 110 and 125 pistons: same 52.4mm bore, different compression height and pin position. Ordering by bore alone is the classic error
- Cam chains: length varies with cylinder height across the 110, 125, 140 and 150 classes. A chain that is one link long will run for an hour and then jump timing
- Clutch cover gaskets: several near-identical outlines across the YX and Lifan groups, differing only in one boss position
- PZ19 and PZ22 carburettors: visually alike at a glance, different spigot diameter and different jet threads
- 4-pin and 5-pin CDI plugs: physically similar shells, completely different wiring. Count the pins and check for a battery before ordering
- GX200 and Predator 212 heads: interchange is common but the 212 has a larger bore, so valve-to-bore clearance must be checked before running
- Kickstart shafts on the 110 versus the manual 125: same splines, different length, and the shorter one will not reach the return spring
- Chinese 420 and 428 chain: half an inch apart in roller width, and a 420 sprocket with a 428 chain will run just long enough to ruin both
What to buy first, once you know
Once the family is settled, a small stock of parts on the shelf removes almost all of the downtime risk in this segment. None of it is expensive and all of it is open-channel.
Buy a full gasket set for your family. Buy a spare cam chain and tensioner. Buy a set of clutch plates for a manual engine, or a centrifugal clutch shoe set for a semi-auto. Buy a spare CDI in the correct pin count, because a dead CDI is a five-minute fix that otherwise ends a weekend. Buy the jets one size up and one size down from stock, which costs almost nothing and covers altitude and exhaust changes.
For a GX-pattern mini bike or kart, the same logic gives a different list: a spare flywheel key, a carburettor rebuild kit, a set of valve springs, a spare recoil starter, and the correct clutch or torque converter for the shaft diameter you measured.
Write the family and the bore on a label inside the toolbox. In eighteen months, when the machine is dusty and the badge decal has peeled, that label is what stops you guessing.
