Dirt Bike Tire Pressure by Terrain: PSI for Sand, Mud, Hardpack and Rock
Twelve psi front and rear is the working default, and terrain moves it about five psi in total: roughly 10 in deep sand and mud, 12-13 on loam, 14-15 on rock and hardpack. Below about 12 psi a rim lock stops being optional, and below 8 the bead can walk. Youth 50cc-110cc machines run so little air volume that their usable window is roughly half as wide, and they arrive from the crate at 25-35 psi.

Twelve psi front and rear is the honest default for a full-size off-road machine, and nearly everything you do afterwards is moving one or two psi in response to what the ground is doing. Sand and mud pull you down toward 10. Rock and hardpack push you up toward 14 or 15. That is the entire useful spread, about five psi, and inside it pressure changes grip more than a new tyre does.
Youth machinery is the exception that catches people out. A 2.50-10 tyre on a 50cc holds a fraction of the air a 110/90-19 holds, so a two-psi error is a far larger proportional change and the usable window narrows to roughly 12-15 psi. You also need a gauge that can resolve it, which the one in your truck cannot.
Before any of that: check what you were actually sent. Crate machines ship hard, commonly 25-35 psi, because an inflated tyre survives a container and a forklift better than a soft one. Plenty of them get ridden all summer at delivery pressure by owners who assumed a factory set it.
The number moulded into the sidewall is not the number you want
That figure is a maximum for mounting and transport. Some knobbies carry 30 psi or more on the sidewall and nobody rides them anywhere near it. Treating it as a recommendation is the single most common mistake in this whole subject, and it is why so many first-time owners describe a brand new machine as skittish.
Your real floor is set by the rim, not the tyre. Somewhere around 8 psi the bead starts to walk under power, and once the tyre rotates while the tube stays put, the valve stem tears out at its base. No warning, no repair, and the tube is scrap. A rim lock is the clamp that stops that happening, which is why the pressure at which you need one is a genuine spec and not a preference.
The pressure grid
Pick the row for the surface you will spend most of the day on, not the worst two hundred yards of it. Everything below is cold pressure, measured before the machine moves.

Changing two things at once teaches you nothing. Mousses and bib inserts do not take a pressure setting at all. They behave like a fixed 12-13 psi when new and get softer as they heat and age, which is why desert racers replace them on a schedule rather than when they fail. They are also close to unavailable in 10-inch and 12-inch youth sizes, so ignore that column if your machine is a pit bike.
One habit worth adopting: write your numbers on a strip of tape inside the toolbox lid. Pressure creeps down about a psi a week on a tubed tyre that is sitting, and the gap between what you think it is at and what it is at grows all season.

The grid above assumes roughly 160-180 lb of rider plus gear, which is where most published figures sit. Move away from that and the rear wants attention first, because the rear carries more of the load under power and it is the rear that pinches.

Suspension setup covers most of what people try to fix with pressure. If the machine is harsh, sag and compression damping are the honest answer, and dropping to 9 psi to soften it just buys you a pinched tube on the third lap.
Rim locks: when one is not enough
There is one more component people forget: the rim strip. On budget wheels it is often a thin band of rubber that slips and exposes a spoke nipple to the tube. Check it every time the tyre is off, and replace it with a proper strip or two wraps of duct tape if it has hardened.
- Almost every off-road machine leaves the factory with one rear rim lock fitted. Check that it is there before assuming it.
- A front rim lock earns its place once the front drops below about 10 psi, which in practice means sand and mud only.
- Two rear locks are a sand-and-horsepower combination. On a 110cc clone engine you will never need the second one.
- A rim lock weighs roughly 60-90 g. Tape a wheel weight opposite it or you will feel the imbalance on road transit sections.
- Torque it snug, around 12-15 Nm. Crushing it distorts the bead seat and creates the leak you were trying to prevent.
- The valve stem is your indicator. If it leans away from square, the tyre has already rotated on the rim. Deflate, break the bead, rotate it back, retighten the lock.
Youth machines have a much narrower window
The small end of this segment runs 2.50-10 front and rear on a 50cc, 60/100-14 front with 80/100-12 rear on a standard pit bike, and 70/100-17 with 90/100-14 on a big-wheel. Air volume in that first pairing is tiny. Two psi either side of correct is felt immediately by a 60 lb rider, and the same two psi on an adult machine is a rounding error.
Practical window: 12 psi at the bottom, 15 at the top, and set toward the bottom for grass and loam, the top for gravel and concrete pads. Below 11 psi the tyre goes vague and the rider stops trusting the front, which on a first machine matters more than any lap time.
Quads and karts are not the same conversation and the numbers do not transfer. A youth quad on 19x7-8 front and 18x9.5-8 rear tyres runs in low single digits, commonly 4-5 psi, and the maximum moulded on many of those sidewalls is 5. Putting a motorcycle figure into a quad tyre distorts the tread and lifts the shoulder off the ground. Karts on small slicks or turf tyres sit around 8-15 psi and move with track temperature through the day.
Your gauge is probably the problem
A 0-60 psi gauge reading 12 psi is working at the bottom fifth of its scale, where a typical dial or pencil unit is out by a psi or two. On a five-psi total working range that is a quarter of everything you are trying to control. It is the cheapest bad tool in the garage.
Buy a low-range gauge, 0-15 or 0-30 psi, with a bleed button so you can set pressure without pulling the gauge off and losing an unknown amount. Motion Pro and similar off-road units are the standard here. Digital is fine and often easier to read in poor light. What matters is the range, not the technology.
Then check the gauge against a second one once a season. Gauges drift, and a gauge that reads two psi high has you riding at 10 while you believe you are at 12.
Cold readings, hot tyres and the trailer effect
Set pressure cold, always, before the machine has turned a wheel. A hard session puts 1-3 psi into a tyre through heat, and a rock or desert loop in summer can put in more. If you set 14 psi at the end of a moto you are actually running 11 or 12 the next morning.
Ambient temperature does the same thing more slowly. The working rule is about one psi for every 10 degrees F of change, which is why a machine set in a warm garage in October reads low at a frozen trailhead in January. Ride days that start at 30 F and finish at 60 F genuinely shift a tyre through the middle of its band.
None of this needs to be complicated. Gauge in the pocket, check at the truck, one psi at a time. The riders who are fussy about tyre pressure are not being precious about it, they are just the ones who stopped patching tubes.
