What a Dirt Bike Actually Weighs: Dry, Wet and Ramp-Loading Weight by Model
Importers publish dry weight, which excludes fuel, oil and often the battery. Add roughly 8 to 12 lb for a small four-stroke to get the number you actually lift. A 125cc import pit bike lands near 140 lb wet and a 250cc import near 270 lb, and the ramp length matters more than either figure when loading alone.

The number in the listing is dry weight, and it is not the number you lift. Dry weight excludes fuel and usually excludes oil, coolant and the battery. Add roughly 8 to 12 lb for a small four-stroke and 12 to 18 lb for a 250 to get the figure that matters when the machine is on its side in a field.
A 125cc import pit bike sits near 140 lb wet. A Japanese 125cc trail machine sits near 195. A 250cc import off-road bike sits near 270. Those three numbers cover most of what people in this segment are actually picking up.
The second half of the problem is geometry, not mass. Getting 270 lb up a ramp into a 34-inch truck bed alone is a question of ramp length and angle far more than of strength, and the arithmetic is unforgiving in a way most people discover in a car park.
Dry, wet and curb: three numbers, one machine
Manufacturers use these terms inconsistently, so define them before comparing anything.
Dry weight is the machine with no fluids at all. It is the smallest legitimate number and therefore the one marketing prefers. Wet or curb weight is the machine ready to ride with a full tank, oil in the engine, coolant if fitted and the battery installed. Japanese manufacturers now generally publish curb weight, which is why an OEM figure can look heavy against an import dry figure for a machine that is actually similar.
The fluids themselves are easy to account for.

Japanese OEM entries are published curb weights. Import entries are bands, because the same badge covers several chassis and published import figures are dry, optimistic and inconsistently sourced.

Ramp angle is straightforward trigonometry: the angle equals the arcsine of the deck height divided by the ramp length. What that produces is a table people find genuinely surprising the first time they see it.
Below about 20 degrees a single person can push a 200 lb machine up a ramp and keep control of it. Between 20 and 25 it becomes work and the front wheel starts wanting to lift. Above 25 degrees it becomes the kind of job where a slip means the machine comes back down on top of somebody.

An arched ramp gains you a few degrees at the top where it matters, because the steepest section is in the middle rather than at the tailgate lip. And a ramp with a proper plate or lip at the truck end stops the classic failure, which is not the ramp breaking but the ramp sliding sideways off the tailgate mid-push.
Load rating is separate from length and gets ignored. The sensible rule is a rating of at least one and a half times the wet weight of the machine, and higher if anyone is going to ride it up rather than push it. Riding a machine up a ramp is how people end up in the bed of a pickup underneath it, and the practice is not worth defending.
Loading alone without dropping it
- Park on level ground with the truck against a kerb or slope so the tailgate sits as low as possible
- Secure the ramp to the tailgate before anything else. A strap or a proper hook plate, every time
- Walk the machine up from the left side with the engine off, in first gear, using the clutch or the compression to hold it if it stops
- Keep the front brake covered with two fingers throughout so a slip does not become a roll-back
- For anything over 200 lb, use a second person or a winch. Two ramps and a plank walkway alongside is the standard field fix
- Tie down over the fork tubes with the front suspension compressed roughly a third, using soft loops so the straps do not chafe the tubes
- Use four tie-down points minimum, two forward and two rearward, so the machine cannot pivot
- Release the tie-downs slowly at the far end; a fork with 200 lb of preload in it will jump the machine when the last strap comes off
Import against Japanese OEM at the same displacement
The gap is real and it moves in a direction most people do not expect.

That reversal at 250cc is worth understanding before buying. Below 150cc, import machines are lighter because they carry less: no electric start, no lighting loom, minimal bodywork, a smaller tank and a very simple frame. At 250cc the import advantage disappears, because those machines use a vertical CG-pattern engine that is genuinely heavy and a steel frame built to a price rather than to a weight target.
Weight and the parts you break
Mass shows up in the Second-Season Index through a route people rarely connect: the heavier the machine relative to its components, the faster the consumables go.
A 270 lb import 250 running the same wheel bearings, chain and brake components as a 200 lb machine will eat all three faster, and on an import that means those parts move from an annual replacement to a twice-a-season replacement. That is fine when the parts are open-channel and cheap. It becomes the reason a machine gets parked when the bearing is importer-only.
The other place weight bites is handling recovery. A rider who cannot pick their own machine up is a rider who stops riding alone, and a machine that only gets ridden when a second adult is available gets ridden about a third as often. That single fact predicts second-season survival better than almost anything on the spec sheet.
So when the choice is close, take the lighter machine. It gets ridden more, it costs less in consumables, and it is far more likely to still be running twelve months after the crate came off the truck.
