Why Won't My Dirt Bike Start: A Test-by-Test Decision Table
Nine times out of ten it is fuel, and on a machine that sat over winter it is the pilot jet specifically. Work the order spark, fuel, compression, air, because each test kills a whole branch of possibilities rather than one part. If a 4-stroke reads under about 90 psi on the compression gauge, you need a top end, not another carburettor.

Start with the branch, not the part. An engine needs spark, fuel, compression and air, and each of those can be confirmed or eliminated in under five minutes with tools you probably own. Doing that in order costs you twenty minutes and tells you exactly what to buy. Guessing costs you a carburettor, a CDI, a coil and a weekend, and the machine still will not start.
The odds, for what they are worth on this class of machine: a blocked pilot jet or stale fuel accounts for most no-starts after storage, a grounded kill circuit accounts for a surprising share of no-spark cases, and zero valve clearance on a clone 4-stroke accounts for most bikes that start cold and refuse hot.
One rule before you begin. If the machine has never run since delivery, treat it as an assembly problem rather than a fault. Crate bikes arrive with unplugged connectors, shipping plugs in fuel lines, taps turned off and, occasionally, no oil in the engine at all.
Five minutes of free checks first

Three symptoms cover almost everything, and they point at different parts of the machine.
Never started since delivery points at assembly and fuel delivery. Ran fine yesterday points at fuel condition, ignition and a plug that got wet. Starts cold but not hot points hard at valve clearance on a 4-stroke and at a heat-failing coil on either engine type. That last one is the most misdiagnosed symptom in this segment, because a tight exhaust valve produces it perfectly and the carburettor gets blamed instead.

Every row either clears a branch or names a part, and cost bands are indicative rather than a quote. Two notes on the tests themselves. An inline spark tester costs about the same as a plug and is worth ten times more, because grounding a plug against the head tells you a spark exists but not whether it is strong enough to jump a gap under compression. And starting fluid is a diagnostic, not a starting method. Repeated use on a 4-stroke washes the bore, and on a 2-stroke it displaces the only lubrication the piston gets.
Reading the compression gauge
Throttle wide open, plug out, kick until the needle stops climbing, which is usually five to seven kicks. A cold engine reads slightly low. Altitude matters too, roughly three to four percent off per thousand feet, so a healthy engine in Denver reads noticeably lower than the same engine at sea level.

On the small clone carburettors fitted across this segment, pilot jets sit in roughly the #35 to #45 range and the orifice is well under half a millimetre. One flake of tank rust, one strand from a rag, or the varnish left by a tank of ethanol fuel over winter will block it completely. The machine then does exactly what people describe as 'a fuel problem' without ever narrowing it further.
Cleaning is specific work. Carburettor cleaner and compressed air, not a wire, because opening the orifice with a drill bit or a strand of copper permanently changes the jetting and you will chase a rich idle forever. If the jet will not clear in two attempts, replace it. A full jet set for these carbs is cheap and you should own one anyway.
- Drain the bowl every time the machine goes into storage for more than a month.
- Turn the tap off and let the engine run itself out of fuel, which empties the bowl properly.
- Look at the fuel screw position before you dismantle anything, counting turns out from lightly seated so you can put it back.
- Check the tank vent in the filler cap. A blocked vent creates a vacuum that mimics every fuel fault on this page.
- Fit an inline filter. Budget tanks shed scale and the tap screen alone does not catch it.
Starts cold, dies hot, will not restart
This is the signature of a tight exhaust valve, and it is close to universal on air-cooled clone 4-strokes because their valve seats bed in during the first ten to twenty hours. Clearance shrinks as the seat recedes. Cold, there is just enough gap for the valve to close and the engine starts fine. Hot, everything expands, the gap goes to nothing, the valve is held fractionally off its seat, compression drops and there is nothing to start.
Check it stone cold with the piston at top dead centre on the compression stroke, both rocker arms loose. The horizontal clone family runs 0.05 mm, two thou, on both valves. Feeler gauge should drag slightly, not slide free and not jam.
If you reset it and it has closed up again within ten hours, the seat is still moving and the head is on borrowed time. That is not a disaster on this class of engine, because a complete replacement head is cheap and fitting one is a couple of hours with a torque wrench.
When it is the top end and not the carburettor
Some rows on the table are terminal. Be honest about them, because the money spent on parts that were never faulty is the real cost of a no-start.
A 4-stroke clone under 90 psi that does not respond to a wet test and has correct valve clearance needs a piston and rings at minimum, and probably a bore. A 2-stroke under 100 psi with visible aluminium smeared in the exhaust port is a seized piston that freed itself off, and it will do it again the moment it gets hot. Neither of those is a jetting problem and no amount of carburettor cleaning changes it.
The economics are worth knowing before you commit. On an air-cooled 110-125cc clone a complete top-end kit runs roughly $60-120, while a complete replacement engine typically lands in the $250-450 band. If the crank has play or the gearbox already jumps out of second, the sensible move is the whole engine. That is a genuinely different answer from what you would give for a Japanese trail bike, and it is one of the few places where the budget end of the segment works in the owner's favour.
What the shop will tell you
Bring a machine like this to a dealer and the first thing you will hear is a minimum bench charge, often an hour, before anyone looks at it. The second thing is that they may decline the work entirely on an unbadged import, because they cannot source parts through their normal channel and they will not warranty labour on a machine they cannot get pistons for.
That is not snobbery, it is inventory. It is also the reason it pays to work the table above yourself. Every test on it is within the reach of a spark tester, a compression gauge, a set of feeler gauges and an afternoon, and the total outlay for those tools is less than one diagnostic hour anywhere.
Keep notes as you go. Which test, which reading, which date. When you eventually sell the machine, a page of readings does more for the price than a wash and a set of graphics.
